On March 11, 2027, exactly two years from today, Test cricket will celebrate its 150th anniversary. To mark this occasion, Australia and England will play a historic day-night Test match with a pink ball at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from March 11 to 15, 2027. Cricket Australia announced this on Tuesday, stating that this will be the first-ever day-night Test match between these two teams at the MCG. This clash will be nothing short of a grand spectacle, as Australia and England have always shared a fierce cricketing rivalry.
It was at this very historic stadium that the first-ever Test match between Australia and England was played in 1877. The MCG also hosted the Centenary Test in 1977 between the same teams. Interestingly, Australia won both matches by an identical margin of 45 runs.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg stated, “A major match will be held at the MCG to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. The game will be played under lights, making it a fantastic way to celebrate both the sport’s rich history and the evolution of Test cricket in modern times.”

He further added, “This will help ensure a larger audience and make it a thrilling experience for fans.”
Australia will host England for the 2025-26 Ashes series, set to begin in November. The final Test of the series will be a day-night match, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. So far, Australia has played 13 day-night Tests, winning 12 of them. Eight of these victories have come at Adelaide Oval. While Australia has a strong record at the MCG, England will be determined to make this historic match a memorable one.
