A struggling England side will face their Ashes rivals, Australia, in their first match of the Champions Trophy. Both teams have been struggling in ODIs. Defending world champions Australia recently lost back-to-back series against Sri Lanka (0-2) and Pakistan (1-2).
Key Australian Players Ruled Out Due to Injuries
England, under coach Brendon McCullum, has not won an ODI series since their poor performance in the 2023 World Cup. Jos Buttler’s side recently suffered a 3-0 series defeat against India. The last time England and Australia played an ODI series was in September 2024, which Australia won 3-2. However, since then, Australia has lost five key players due to injuries.
Their lethal fast-bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc is unavailable due to injuries. All-rounders Mitchell Marsh (back injury) and Cameron Green (injury) are also out, while Marcus Stoinis has retired unexpectedly. It remains to be seen whether stand-in captain Steve Smith can lead Australia to success in this mini World Cup.
Smith Likely to Bat at No. 3
In Marsh’s absence, Smith is expected to bat at No. 3 and anchor the innings. All eyes will be on attacking opener Travis Head, who scored 101 and 89 in the 2022 series at this venue. Last year, he played a remarkable unbeaten 154-run innings against England at Trent Bridge.
High Expectations from Ben Duckett
England’s pace attack features Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Brydon Carse, with Adil Rashid handling the spin department. Speaking to Cricket.com.au, Travis Head said, “We will focus on getting a good start. As an opener, I have to perform at my best.” England will also rely on Ben Duckett, who was in excellent form against India. Star batter Joe Root will be the backbone of England’s batting lineup and will look to prove his worth again.
