He is the only chess player who had won the world championship playing in Match, Tournament and Knockout formats.

    Viswanathan Anand’s father is Krishnamurthy Viswanathan. Father of Viswanathan Anand was a general manager in the Southern Railways. As we know that he was born in Tamil Nadu into a Brahmin family and is the youngest of three siblings. He had completed his schooling from Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School before joining Loyola College, Chennai.

    Viswanathan “Vishy” Anand, born on December 11, 1969, is an esteemed Indian chess grandmaster and a former five-time World Chess Champion. Achieving the title of grandmaster in 1988, Anand marked a historic milestone as the first grandmaster from India. Renowned for his chess prowess, he holds the eighth highest peak FIDE rating of all time. In 2022, Anand further solidified his influence in the chess world by being elected as the deputy president of FIDE.

    Anand’s dominance on the global chess stage is highlighted by his victories in major championships. He secured the 2000 FIDE World Chess Championship by defeating Alexei Shirov, a title he retained until 2002. Becoming the undisputed world champion in 2007, Anand successfully defended his title against formidable opponents like Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, Veselin Topalov in 2010, and Boris Gelfand in 2012. While his reign faced a setback in 2013 with a loss to Magnus Carlsen, Anand continued to showcase his skill, winning the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in 2003 and 2017, as well as the World Blitz Cup in 2000.

    Anand’s legacy extends beyond championships, as he is recognized for his rapid playing speed, earning him the nickname “Lightning Kid” in the 1980s. His versatility as a player has garnered praise, with many considering him the greatest rapid chess player of his generation. In acknowledgment of his exceptional contributions to the sport, Anand received prestigious awards such as the Khel Ratna Award in 1991–92 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, making him the first sportsperson to be honored with the latter, India’s second-highest civilian award.
