Yashasvi Jaiswal is making significant strides as an Indian top-order batter with each Test match. Following the victory over Bangladesh in Kanpur, Jaiswal shared insights into his mindset while batting on the fourth day of the Test at Green Park. His impressive fifty in the second innings played a crucial role in guiding India to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Bangladesh on Tuesday. Jaiswal was named the Player of the Match for his contributions, scoring 72 in the first innings and 51 in the second.
He became the first Indian opener in the 92-year history of Test cricket to score two half-centuries in both innings of a match against Bangladesh. This year, Jaiswal has achieved eight scores of 50 or more, the highest by any Indian batter at home in a single calendar year. The previous record was shared by Gundappa Viswanath (1979), Virender Sehwag (2010), Cheteshwar Pujara (2016), and KL Rahul (2017), each with seven 50+ scores.
“I was just focused on how I could contribute to my team,” Jaiswal said during the post-match presentation. “The situation here was different from Chennai, and I aimed to do what was best for my team. Every innings matters to me, and I prepare accordingly. Rohit bhai advised me to play my natural game. We discussed the need to put runs on the board and play freely, aiming for victory.”
In the match, Jaiswal’s outstanding performance in the second innings helped secure India’s victory by seven wickets. The Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, took the field in the second session on Day 5, needing 95 runs to win. Rohit was dismissed for just eight runs, followed by Shubman Gill, who added only six runs to the total before also returning to the pavilion.
