Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend AB de Villiers has ruled out the possibility of his former franchise signing star India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant, who was released by Delhi Capitals, is one of the high-profile names entering the auction and is expected to attract fierce competition. De Villiers believes RCB may not be able to match the final bid for Pant, especially with teams like Punjab Kings (PBKS), who have a massive purse of Rs 110.5 crore, set to make a strong push for him.

“I think it’s incredibly unlikely that RCB will be able to sign Rishabh Pant. He’s going to be too expensive, and all the franchises will be bidding for him. Punjab Kings will probably spend whatever it takes to get him,” de Villiers shared on his YouTube channel. He also speculated that Pant might reunite with his former Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting, now with Punjab Kings.

While Pant remains a top target, de Villiers suggested that RCB should focus on signing their former player KL Rahul instead, as he may come at a more affordable price. However, the former South African captain emphasized that RCB’s primary focus should be on strengthening their bowling attack, particularly with the addition of a world-class spinner and talented local players.

“I’ve said it before, RCB should focus on improving the bowling department, getting a world-class spinner and local players. I’ve heard Anil Kumble mention before that they don’t keep their local quality players, which they should,” de Villiers added. He also expressed confidence in Rahul’s potential return to form and his ability to lead RCB in the future, noting that he could take over from Virat Kohli.

The IPL 2025 mega auction will take place in Riyadh on November 24 and 25.
