The IPL 2025 season hasn’t started yet, but replacements are being made one after another. In fact, one replacement has even turned into a legal dispute because a player chose the IPL over the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Corbin Bosch was originally set to play in the PSL, but Mumbai Indians’ pacer Lizaad Williams got injured. As a result, MI signed Corbin Bosch, who then withdrew from the PSL. Due to this, the PCB has taken action against him. However, what are the rules regarding replacements in the IPL? Let’s understand them.
The IPL replacement rules allow the BCCI to approve a replacement not just before the season starts but even during the season if a player gets injured or falls ill. However, the BCCI has made some modifications to the rules for this season. Now, teams are allowed to make replacements until their 12th league match, whereas earlier, this was only permitted until the 7th match.
A replacement player must be someone who has registered for the current IPL season. If a player had registered with a base price of ₹1 crore but went unsold or was not included in the auction pool, and a franchise wants to sign him as a replacement, the team must pay at least ₹1 crore, which was his base price. The amount cannot be lower, but it can be higher.

There have been several instances where franchises have included bowlers from the RAPP list as net bowlers. However, if another franchise wants to sign them as a replacement, the original franchise has no right to stop them. A replacement player can only be signed for a fee that does not exceed the league fee payable to the injured player being replaced.
Additionally, if a player gets injured during the IPL and the BCCI’s medical team determines that he will not recover before the season ends, he can be replaced. However, even if he regains fitness later, he will not be allowed to return for the season. If a player joins the IPL mid-season as a replacement, he will be paid based on the league fee applicable to him.
