Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced their sixth defeat of the IPL 2025 season on Sunday. Playing against Mumbai Indians on their home ground, CSK was completely outplayed. Mumbai chased down the target of 177 runs within just 16 overs, thanks to explosive innings from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. With this win, MI secured their third consecutive victory and now have four wins in total. Meanwhile, CSK has lost 6 out of 8 matches. This raises the big question – how can CSK still qualify for the playoffs this season?

Currently, CSK is placed at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table – 10th position – with only 2 wins from 8 games. The sixth loss has made their path to the playoffs extremely tough. However, CSK is still mathematically in the race. The team can reach a maximum of 16 points, but only if they win all their remaining 6 matches in a row. While this isn’t impossible, it seems highly unlikely based on their current performance.

On the other hand, five teams already have 10 points each and are yet to play at least 6 more matches. This means that even if CSK reaches 16 points, their qualification won’t be guaranteed. However, if MS Dhoni’s team does manage to win all of their remaining games, they will stay in contention. After that, CSK will have to depend on other match results and also ensure they maintain a strong Net Run Rate to have a realistic shot at finishing in the top 4.
