Sri Lanka women’s cricketer Chamari Athapaththu has become the first-ever player to score a century in the Women’s T20I Asia Cup. She achieved this milestone in Match 7 of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup against Malaysia. Opening the innings, she stayed unbeaten on 119 off 69 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and seven sixes, with a strike rate of 172.46. Her impressive performance helped Sri Lanka set a challenging target of 185.

Chamari surpassed the previous highest individual score in the Asia Cup, which was held by former India captain Mithali Raj, who scored an unbeaten 97 against Malaysia in 2018. Additionally, Chamari is the first player from a full-member nation to hit multiple centuries in a calendar year, with this being her third century in 2024.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers were also dominant, effectively breaking through Malaysia’s batting lineup. Harshitha Madavi and Anushka Sanjeewani added 26 and 31 runs, respectively, while Vishmi Gunaratne and Kavisha Dilhari were less successful, scoring one and zero runs.

While chasing, Malaysia struggled against Sri Lanka’s strong bowling attack, managing only 37 runs for seven wickets in 15.3 overs.
