Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants will begin their IPL 2025 campaign under new captains. Axar Patel will lead Delhi Capitals this season, while Rishabh Pant will captain Lucknow Super Giants. This will be the first time Pant plays for a team other than Delhi Capitals. He led Delhi last season, but now he faces the challenge of leading Lucknow.

Lucknow bought Pant for ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Clearly, Lucknow has high expectations from Pant, especially after their failure to reach the playoffs last season. Meanwhile, KL Rahul, who captained Lucknow for three seasons, will now play for Delhi Capitals. Rahul will take the field as a wicketkeeper-batsman this time, as he will not have the additional responsibility of captaincy. This means Indian cricket stars Rahul and Pant will now compete against each other on the field.
On paper, Delhi Capitals appear to have a strong squad, with a good mix of Indian and overseas players. In batting, they will benefit from the experience of Faf du Plessis, while their bowling attack will be strengthened by Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. Delhi’s middle order looks solid with the presence of Karun Nair, who has performed well in domestic cricket, along with KL Rahul, Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi, and Ashutosh Sharma. Their bowling unit also looks strong, with India’s experienced spin duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. In the pace department, they have Starc, T Natarajan, Mohit Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, and Dushmantha Chameera.
Lucknow will hope that their Indian players blend well with their overseas stars. Among their foreign players, Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be available only as a specialist batsman due to an injury that prevents him from bowling. As a result, Lucknow will rely on the South African duo of David Miller and Aiden Markram to deliver strong performances. Additionally, Nicholas Pooran adds firepower to Lucknow’s batting lineup, as he has the ability to change the course of a match single-handedly. Lucknow also boasts talented Indian batsmen like Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, and Shahbaz Ahmed.
However, Lucknow’s bowling department is a cause for concern, as their Indian pacers Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Akash Deep are recovering from injuries. The addition of all-rounder Shardul Thakur has strengthened their squad. Shardul was included in the team as a replacement for injured pacer Mohsin Khan.
