Delhi Capitals appear set to pass on appointing Sourav Ganguly as their next head coach, despite his expressed interest and a recent parting of ways with Ricky Ponting after seven seasons.
In a recent interview with Bengali Daily Aajkaal, Ganguly voiced his desire to transition into coaching, even mentioning efforts to recruit England’s promising talent Jamie Smith for DC’s SA20 side, Pretoria Capitals. However, DC seems reluctant to burden Ganguly, who currently serves as their Director of Cricket overseeing multiple franchise responsibilities including the ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and Pretoria Capitals in the SA T20 league.
“The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic,” the source added.
The primary reason behind DC’s hesitation to appoint Ganguly as head coach appears to be a quest for stability, particularly in the lead-up to the mega auctions.
Furthermore, DC is reportedly exploring candidates such as former World Cup-winning cricketers to fill the coaching role, with a decision likely after the conclusion of the Major League Cricket.
Ahead of the 2025 season, DC anticipates a revamped support staff and scouting team, aiming to enhance their competitive edge after several underwhelming seasons.
