The excitement for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is mounting as fans and franchises eagerly await the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) to announce the new retention policy. Key questions about the number of retentions allowed and the maximum number of overseas players that can be retained by each franchise are yet to be answered.
The IPL 2025 auction is scheduled for December, but according to Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s announcement of the retention policy, originally expected by the end of August, may be delayed. Franchises might have until November 15 to finalize their picks.

A month ago, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanath denied reports suggesting that the franchise requested the reintroduction of a scrapped rule to retain MS Dhoni at a lower price. Previously, an international player could be classified as ‘uncapped’ if they had been retired for five years, a rule abolished after IPL 2021. CSK had hoped this rule would be reinstated to allow them to retain Dhoni at a reduced price, but Viswanath clarified that no such request was made.
Recent reports indicate that the BCCI is now considering reintroducing the ‘uncapped’ category for retired players, which could benefit Dhoni, CSK, and the league as a whole.
