Sumit Nagal, born on August 16, 1997, hails from Jhajjar, Haryana, and is the son of school teacher Suresh Nagal and homemaker Krishna Devi. His journey in tennis began at the age of eight at a local sports club, and at ten, he joined Mahesh Bhupathi’s training academy as part of the inaugural batch of the Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 program.

Initially based in Bangalore from 2008 to 2010, Nagal later moved to Toronto for training under Coach Bobby Mahal. In 2015, he clinched the Wimbledon boys’ doubles title with partner Lý Hoàng Nam, making him the sixth Indian to win a junior Grand Slam title.

Nagal’s career progressed, and he secured his first ITF Futures title at the India F8 tournament, followed by a victory at India F11. In 2016, he made his Davis Cup debut for India and continued to make notable strides, including winning his first ATP Challenger title in 2017.

Despite facing challenges and controversies, Nagal emerged triumphant, claiming titles at various tournaments, including the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017 and the Bengaluru Challenger in 2017. In 2019, he made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the US Open, facing Roger Federer in a memorable match.

The year 2020 saw Nagal securing his first Grand Slam main draw win at the US Open. In 2021, he made his Olympic debut, reaching the second round and becoming the first Indian in 25 years to achieve this feat in singles tennis at the Olympics.
