Indian team captain Rohit Sharma is likely to retain his place for the upcoming five-match Test series against England in June. According to news agency PTI, Rohit is fully fit and will continue to lead the team despite his underwhelming performances against New Zealand and Australia. The Indian squad for the England tour is expected to be announced in the second week of May.
Six Players in the Race for Middle Order
As per the PTI report, there are at least six contenders for two middle-order slots. While 17 players were selected for the Australia tour, the squad for England is expected to comprise only 15 or 16 players. During the tour, India A will also be in England, allowing selectors to call up players from the A squad if needed.
Karun Nair in Contention
Changes in the Test squad are expected, especially with several players performing well in domestic cricket. Karun Nair, who has shown good form in both ODIs and Tests, could be given a chance in the India A squad. If all key players remain fit, selections of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli are almost certain. For the all-rounder role, Nitish Kumar Reddy is currently the front-runner.
Selectors Face Dilemma Over Reserve Batters
Though the final squad is not yet decided, at least six players are under serious consideration. One or two of them might get a place in the senior squad, while the rest are likely to feature in the India A series against England Lions. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will need to think carefully, especially when choosing reserve batters. If a 15-member squad is chosen, there will be room for one extra middle-order batter; if it’s a 16-member squad, then possibly two.

Will Sai Sudharsan Get a Chance?
Sai Sudharsan, who has scored seven centuries in 29 First-Class matches, is also being closely monitored. He has already proven himself in the IPL with Gujarat Titans. Selectors are impressed by the left-hander’s solid technique and his good performance for India A in Australia before getting injured. His biggest strength is his versatility—he can open the innings as well as bat in the middle order, depending on the team’s requirements.
The tour will begin on June 20 and conclude in the first week of August.
