Former New Zealand fast bowler and current Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond has shared his thoughts on Jasprit Bumrah’s ongoing injury concerns and future in cricket. The 49-year-old suggested that the Indian pacer’s struggles with injuries might not be over yet, casting doubt over his participation in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
Widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in the world, Bumrah was initially expected to feature in this year’s IPL. However, his availability for Mumbai Indians remains uncertain due to lingering injury issues. Bond revealed that the 31-year-old is at risk of a fracture, which serves as a warning for the franchise as they compete in the tournament.
What did Shane Bond Say about Jasprit Bumrah’s Back Injury?
“He had the [2023] surgery, but he played all that [Border-Gavaskar] Test series, performed unbelievably. At the end of the day, he just bowled too much over one month, and it hasn’t cracked, he hasn’t got a fracture, he is on the borderline of a fracture. But what India would have learned is, if you then look at a five-Test series in England and they do the same thing, they are probably going to get the same result,” Bond told ESPNCricinfo.
Although there has been no official confirmation about his return, Bumrah was recently spotted bowling in the nets at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), raising hopes for his comeback. Mumbai Indians will be eager to have their star pacer back in action as they aim for another strong season. In terms of IPL statistics, Bumrah is the second-highest wicket-taker for the franchise, with 165 wickets in 133 matches. He trails only MI legend Lasith Malinga, who leads the charts with 170 wickets.
