ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 is scheduled to start from 5th October 2023 with a clash between the defending champions England and the runner-ups New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. ICC has revealed that the matches will either start at 10 AM or 2 PM in the tournament.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will also play host to India vs Pakistan clash on 14th October 2023. The match is expected to have a total of more than 120000 people in attendance and set a new record for a cricket match attended by most people at once. World’s largest stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium will also play the host to final of ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
The two semi-finals in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 15th November 2023 and Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on 16th November 2023. The final is scheduled for 19th November 2023 in Ahmedabad. Both the semi-finals and the final have a reserve day if the weather gods do not permit the game to be played on the scheduled day.
A total of 48 matches are going to be played in the tournament across a total of 10 venues in India. Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Dharamsala, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad are the cities which will host the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 matches. Interestingly, Mohali Stadium in Punjab and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad have missed out on hosting any match in the tournament.
A total of 10 teams are participating in the tournament. These teams include India, Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Netherlands. West Indies have failed to qualify for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and Netherlands and Sri Lanka managed to be the top two teams in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Qualifiers to qualify for the tournament.
A total of nine matches in the tournament was rescheduled after the Ahmedabad police raised a concern regarding security during the time of Navaratri. The match between India and Pakistan was originally scheduled to be played on 15th October 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the match was shifted to a day earlier and it triggered a chain of reactions which resulted in the reschedule of nine matches in the tournament.
